Year 10 Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Answers
Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.
1.Find the distance between (−6, 2) and (−5, −4), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 6.1
- Horizontal change = 1, vertical change = 6
- d = √(12 + 62) = √37
- = 6.1
2.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−6, −6) and (−8, −5).
Answer: (−7, −5.5)
- x: (−6 + (−8)) ÷ 2 = −7
- y: (−6 + (−5)) ÷ 2 = −5.5
3.Find the distance between (0, −1) and (5, −13).
Answer: 13
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 12
- d = √(52 + 122) = √169
- = 13
4.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (5, 0) and (−2, 5).
Answer: (1.5, 2.5)
- x: (5 + (−2)) ÷ 2 = 1.5
- y: (0 + 5) ÷ 2 = 2.5
5.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (5, −5) and (1, 5).
Answer: (3, 0)
- x: (5 + 1) ÷ 2 = 3
- y: (−5 + 5) ÷ 2 = 0
6.Find the distance between (5, −4) and (10, −7), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 5.8
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 3
- d = √(52 + 32) = √34
- = 5.8
7.Find the distance between (3, 6) and (−2, 8), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 5.4
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 2
- d = √(52 + 22) = √29
- = 5.4
8.Find the distance between (−4, −4) and (5, 3), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 11.4
- Horizontal change = 9, vertical change = 7
- d = √(92 + 72) = √130
- = 11.4
9.Find the distance between (−1, 3) and (−9, −12).
Answer: 17
- Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 15
- d = √(82 + 152) = √289
- = 17
10.Find the distance between (−3, 3) and (−4, 5), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 2.2
- Horizontal change = 1, vertical change = 2
- d = √(12 + 22) = √5
- = 2.2
11.Find the distance between (−1, −6) and (6, 3), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 11.4
- Horizontal change = 7, vertical change = 9
- d = √(72 + 92) = √130
- = 11.4
12.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (7, 4) and (−5, −8).
Answer: (1, −2)
- x: (7 + (−5)) ÷ 2 = 1
- y: (4 + (−8)) ÷ 2 = −2
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
