Kindergarten / Foundation homeschool resources
In the first year of school, children build the foundations: recognising and writing numbers to 20, counting objects, simple adding and taking away, naming shapes, and in English, letter sounds, early sight words, tracing letters and listening to and retelling stories. Short, playful practice works best — ten minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday.
- Maths (8):
- Addition, Counting, Patterns & Sequences, Subtraction
- English (6):
- Nouns, Handwriting & Letter Formation, Spelling Lists
Year 1 homeschool resources
Year 1 students count, order and add numbers to 20 and beyond, start to use place value (tens and ones), tell o'clock and half-past time and recognise coins. In English they blend sounds to read simple words, write short sentences with capital letters and full stops, and learn common spelling patterns. Confidence matters more than speed at this age.
- Maths (14):
- Problem Solving & Word Problems, Addition, Counting, Money, Patterns & Sequences, Place Value
- English (12):
- Punctuation, Verbs & Tenses, Reading Comprehension, Nouns, Narrative Writing, Spelling Lists
Year 2 homeschool resources
By Year 2, students add and subtract two-digit numbers, skip count, meet the 2, 5 and 10 times tables and work with halves and quarters. Reading becomes more fluent and writing grows into short recounts and stories. Spelling patterns (digraphs, magic e, -ing and -ed) and simple punctuation are a focus.
- Maths (20):
- Addition, Times Tables, Problem Solving & Word Problems, Money, Patterns & Sequences, Place Value
- English (15):
- Narrative Writing, Informative Writing, Reading Comprehension, Adjectives & Adverbs, Verbs & Tenses, Punctuation
Year 3 homeschool resources
Year 3 is a big year: students learn the multiplication facts, add and subtract three-digit numbers with regrouping, read time to the minute and begin unit fractions. In English they write longer narratives and persuasive pieces, learn speech marks and conjunctions, and sit NAPLAN for the first time. Times tables fluency is the single most valuable thing to practise.
- Maths (28):
- Multiplication, Place Value, Times Tables, Division, Units & Conversions, Problem Solving & Word Problems
- English (20):
- Nouns, Sentences & Clauses, Homophones, Verbs & Tenses, Reading Comprehension, Persuasive Writing
Year 4 homeschool resources
In Year 4 students multiply larger numbers, divide with remainders, explore equivalent fractions, decimals to hundredths, angles and area. English moves to apostrophes, compound sentences and more structured text types. Reading comprehension shifts from 'what happened' to 'why' and 'how do you know'.
- Maths (31):
- Decimals, Fractions, Division, Angles, Area & Perimeter, Factors, Multiples & Primes
- English (18):
- Reading Comprehension, Informative Writing, Punctuation, Narrative Writing, Adjectives & Adverbs, Sentences & Clauses
Year 5 homeschool resources
Year 5 brings fractions with different denominators, decimals, factors and multiples, written multiplication and division, and problem solving across several steps. English focuses on complex sentences, subject–verb agreement, persuasive writing and inferential comprehension. NAPLAN happens again in Year 5.
- Maths (36):
- Area & Perimeter, Decimals, Fractions, Place Value, Percentages, Probability
- English (17):
- Punctuation, Sentences & Clauses, Persuasive Writing, Narrative Writing, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension
Year 6 homeschool resources
Year 6 consolidates primary maths: operations with fractions and decimals, percentages, integers, order of operations and probability. Students write analytically, use modal verbs and figurative language, and prepare for the jump to high school. Independent study habits start to matter.
- Maths (30):
- Probability, Fractions, Order of Operations, Percentages, Integers, Mean, Median, Mode & Range
- English (15):
- Sentences & Clauses, Informative Writing, Verbs & Tenses, Vocabulary, Narrative Writing, Reading Comprehension
Year 7 homeschool resources
In Year 7, maths becomes algebraic: integers, simplifying expressions, substitution, solving simple equations, ratios and index notation. English analyses texts and techniques, with longer persuasive and narrative pieces and careful editing. NAPLAN is sat in Year 7.
- Maths (31):
- Algebraic Expressions, Percentages, Integers, Ratio & Rates, Indices & Scientific Notation, Linear Equations
- English (8):
- Adjectives & Adverbs, Reading Comprehension, Punctuation, Sentences & Clauses, Persuasive Writing, Narrative Writing
Year 8 homeschool resources
Year 8 extends algebra to expanding brackets and two-step equations, adds percentages increase and decrease, ratio and rates, index laws and congruence. English examines perspective, voice and audience, with a focus on academic vocabulary and extended responses.
- Maths (24):
- Indices & Scientific Notation, Linear Equations, Ratio & Rates, Algebraic Expressions, Area & Perimeter, Percentages
- English (6):
- Vocabulary, Sentences & Clauses, Punctuation, Homophones, Reading Comprehension
Year 9 homeschool resources
Year 9 students solve more complex equations, work with linear graphs, meet Pythagoras' theorem and trigonometry, and expand binomials. English becomes more analytical, with essays, comparative analysis and persuasive writing. This is the last NAPLAN year.
- Maths (20):
- Linear Relationships & Graphs, Pythagoras' Theorem, Trigonometry, Quadratics, Simultaneous Equations, Indices & Scientific Notation
- English (8):
- Vocabulary, Text Analysis & Essays, Persuasive Writing, Reading Comprehension, Punctuation, Sentences & Clauses
Year 10 homeschool resources
Year 10 prepares students for senior courses: quadratics, simultaneous equations, surds, trigonometry and logarithms, plus data analysis. English examines complex texts and argument. Subject choices for Years 11 and 12 are usually made this year, so knowing strengths and gaps is useful.
- Maths (15):
- Simultaneous Equations, Quadratics, Trigonometry, Indices & Scientific Notation, Pythagoras' Theorem, Linear Equations
- English (7):
- Text Analysis & Essays, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Sentences & Clauses
Year 11 homeschool resources
Year 11 is the first year of senior study. Maths pathways diverge (standard, advanced, extension or equivalents) with functions, calculus and statistics for advanced courses. English requires sustained analytical and creative writing. Good notes and regular revision pay off here.
- Maths (15):
- Functions, Exponentials & Logarithms, Probability, Financial Mathematics, Quadratics, Calculus
- English (6):
- Persuasive Writing, Text Analysis & Essays, Narrative Writing, Reading Comprehension
Year 12 homeschool resources
Year 12 is the final year, assessed for the HSC, VCE, QCE, WACE, SACE or equivalent. Calculus, probability distributions and financial maths feature in advanced courses; English demands polished essays under time pressure. Past-paper style practice and clear study guides are the most effective preparation.
- Maths (13):
- Financial Mathematics, Calculus, Statistics, Exponentials & Logarithms, Functions
- English (6):
- Text Analysis & Essays, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension
