Students learn how senior writers control tone and voice to persuade. They identify tones such as measured, urgent, indignant, wry and conciliatory, examine how modality, sentence length, word choice and irony create each tone, shift a paragraph from one tone to another, and write an opinion piece opening with a deliberately chosen voice.
