Part A — Which one is right?
When we list things, we put a comma (,) between the items and the word and before the last one. Circle the correct sentence.
- AI packed a hat, a towel and sunscreen.
- BI packed a hat a towel and sunscreen.
- CI packed a hat, a towel, and, sunscreen.
- DI packed, a hat, a towel and sunscreen.
Answer: I packed a hat, a towel and sunscreen.
A comma separates the items, and 'and' comes before the last one.
- AWe saw, lions tigers and bears.
- BWe saw lions, tigers and bears.
- CWe saw lions tigers, and bears.
- DWe saw lions, tigers, and, bears.
Answer: We saw lions, tigers and bears.
Commas go between the items, not after 'saw' or 'and'.
- ATom likes red blue, and green.
- BTom likes red, blue and, green.
- CTom likes red, blue and green.
- DTom, likes red blue and green.
Answer: Tom likes red, blue and green.
Red, blue and green are the three items in the list.
- AI need eggs, milk flour and butter.
- BI need, eggs, milk, flour and butter.
- CI need eggs milk flour and butter.
- DI need eggs, milk, flour and butter.
Answer: I need eggs, milk, flour and butter.
Each item is separated by a comma until 'and'.
Part B — Add the commas
Rewrite each sentence with commas in the right places.
Answer: For lunch I had a sandwich, an apple and a juice.
Answer: My pets are a dog, a cat and two fish.
Answer: At the zoo we saw emus, koalas and wombats.
Answer: I can hop, skip, jump and run.
Part C — True or false?
Circle True or False.

The last item is followed by a full stop, not a comma.

Two items just need 'and': 'bread and butter'.
Part D — Your turn
Model answer: I would take my hat, a towel, a bucket and some sunscreen.
