Part A — Today and yesterday
When something has already happened, we add -ed to the verb. Write the past tense verb in the gap.

Part B — Spot the past tense
Circle the correct answer.

'Kicked' has -ed, so it already happened.

Part C — Spelling rules
If the verb ends in e, just add -d. If it has a short vowel and ends in one consonant, double the last letter then add -ed. If it ends in y, change the y to i then add -ed.

Bake already ends in e, so we just add -d.
Answer: hopped
Short vowel then one consonant: double the p, then add -ed.
Answer: cried
Change the y to i, then add -ed.
Answer: stopped
Double the p, then add -ed.
Answer: smiled
Just add -d.
Answer: tried
Change the y to i, then add -ed.

Model answer: On Saturday I played soccer with my cousins. We kicked the ball for hours. Then we walked to the shop for an ice cream.
