What you need to know

A times table fact is just a quick way of adding equal groups. 4 × 3 means 4 groups of 3, which is 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. You do not have to memorise every fact from scratch. Most of them can be worked out from a few facts you already know, using the strategies below. With practice, the answers become automatic.

Strategies that work

  • 2 times table: double it. 2 × 7 is double 7, which is 14.
  • 4 times table: double, then double again. 4 × 6 → double 6 is 12 → double 12 is 24.
  • 8 times table: double three times. 8 × 3 → 6 → 12 → 24.
  • 5 times table: count in 5s. Every answer ends in 0 or 5. 5 × 6 = 30, 5 × 7 = 35.
  • 10 times table: write the number, then a 0. 10 × 8 = 80.
  • 9 times table: use the 10s and take one group away. 9 × 6 → 10 × 6 = 60 → 60 − 6 = 54.
  • 3 times table: double, then add one more group. 3 × 8 → double 8 is 16 → 16 + 8 = 24.
  • Turn-around facts: 3 × 7 and 7 × 3 give the same answer, 21. If you know one, you know both.

Using doubling for the 4 times table

  1. Work out 4 × 7.
  2. Double 7: 7 + 7 = 14.
  3. Double again: 14 + 14 = 28.
  4. So 4 × 7 = 28.

Using the 10s for the 9 times table

  1. Work out 9 × 8.
  2. Start with 10 × 8 = 80.
  3. Take away one group of 8: 80 − 8 = 72.
  4. So 9 × 8 = 72. Check: the digits 7 + 2 add to 9, which is true for every 9 times fact up to 9 × 10.
FactStrategyAnswer
6 × 4Double 6 → 12, double again → 2424
7 × 5Count in 5s seven times: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 3535
8 × 38 × 2 = 16, then add one more 824
9 × 710 × 7 = 70, then take away 763
6 × 86 × 4 = 24, then double it48
Common mistake: mixing up 6 × 8 and 7 × 8. A rhyme helps: 'six times eight is forty-eight', and '5, 6, 7, 8' reminds you that 56 = 7 × 8.
Practise a little every day rather than a lot once a week. Five minutes of mixed questions at the dinner table works better than a long drill, and saying the whole fact aloud ('six fours are twenty-four') helps it stick.
