Part A — What does the prefix mean?

A prefix is added to the front of a word and changes its meaning. Circle the meaning.

1.In unhappy, the prefix 'un' means

Answer: not

Unhappy = not happy.

2.In rewrite, the prefix 're' means
  1. Aagain
  2. Bnot

Answer: again

Rewrite = write again.

3.In preheat, the prefix 'pre' means

  4. Dagain

Answer: before

Preheat = heat before.

4.In misspell, the prefix 'mis' means

Answer: wrongly

Misspell = spell wrongly.

5.In submarine, the prefix 'sub' means

Part B — Add the suffix

A suffix is added to the end of a word. Write the new word. Watch for words ending in y!

7.care + ful =

Answer: careful

8.hope + less =

Answer: hopeless

9.happy + ness =

Answer: happiness

Change the y to i before adding -ness.

10.teach + er =

Answer: teacher

11.beauty + ful =

Answer: beautiful

Change the y to i before adding -ful.

12.move + ment =

Answer: movement

13.rely + able =

Answer: reliable

Change the y to i before adding -able.

14.sudden + ly =

Answer: suddenly

Part C — Break it apart

Use the prefix and suffix to explain what each word means.

15.What does unbreakable mean?

Answer: Cannot be broken (un = not, break, able = can be).

16.What does fearless mean?

Answer: Without fear (less = without).

17.What does rebuild mean?

Answer: Build again (re = again).

18.What does impossible mean?

Answer: Not possible (im = not).

Part D — Word builder

19.Choose a base word (for example play, help or use). Make as many new words as you can by adding prefixes and suffixes, then write a sentence using two of them.

Model answer: help: helpful, helpless, helper, unhelpful, helpfully. The helpful librarian found the book, but the broken printer was unhelpful.

Success criteria:

  • At least four new words built from the base word
  • Each word spelt correctly
  • A sentence using two of the new words correctly
  • Capital letter and full stop

Marking tips
