Year 5 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 28 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 2 = 4 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 4 × 7
- = 28 cm3
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 216 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 3 = 18 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 18 × 12
- = 216 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 315 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 7 × 5 = 35 cm2
- Height = 315 ÷ 35 = 9 cm
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 4 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 132 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 3 = 33 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 33 × 4
- = 132 cm3
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 330 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 6 = 30 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 30 × 11
- = 330 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 180 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 10 × 2 = 20 cm2
- Height = 180 ÷ 20 = 9 cm
7.A rectangular prism is 3 cm long, 10 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 240 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 3 × 10 × 8
- = 240 cm3
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 288 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 8 × 6 = 48 cm2
- Height = 288 ÷ 48 = 6 cm
9.A rectangular prism is 12 cm long, 4 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 480 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 12 × 4 × 10
- = 480 cm3
10.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 90 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 5 = 15 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 15 × 6
- = 90 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
