Year 5 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 72 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 4 × 2 = 8 cm2
- Height = 72 ÷ 8 = 9 cm
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 112 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 4 × 7 = 28 cm2
- Height = 112 ÷ 28 = 4 cm
3.A rectangular prism is 12 cm long, 8 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 960 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 12 × 8 × 10
- = 960 cm3
4.A rectangular prism is 13 cm long, 3 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 117 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 13 × 3 × 3
- = 117 cm3
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 144 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 4 × 4 = 16 cm2
- Height = 144 ÷ 16 = 9 cm
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 420 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 6 × 10 = 60 cm2
- Height = 420 ÷ 60 = 7 cm
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 200 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 4 = 40 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 40 × 5
- = 200 cm3
8.A rectangular prism is 2 cm long, 8 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 160 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 2 × 8 × 10
- = 160 cm3
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 288 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 8 = 24 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 24 × 12
- = 288 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 243 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 3 × 9 = 27 cm2
- Height = 243 ÷ 27 = 9 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
