Year 5 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 3 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 375 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 5 = 25 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 25 × 15
- = 375 cm3
2.A rectangular prism is 11 cm long, 6 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 594 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 11 × 6 × 9
- = 594 cm3
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 8 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 8 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 160 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 8 × 5 = 20 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 20 × 8
- = 160 cm3
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 48 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 6 × 2 = 12 cm2
- Height = 48 ÷ 12 = 4 cm
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 144 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 3 × 6 = 18 cm2
- Height = 144 ÷ 18 = 8 cm
6.A rectangular prism is 13 cm long, 10 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 520 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 13 × 10 × 4
- = 520 cm3
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 16 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 2 cm
- Base area = 4 × 2 = 8 cm2
- Height = 16 ÷ 8 = 2 cm
8.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 11 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 132 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 11 × 3
- = 132 cm3
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 126 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 2 = 18 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 18 × 7
- = 126 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 7 cm long, 10 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 140 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 7 × 10 × 2
- = 140 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
