Year 5 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 4 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 13 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 130 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 2 = 10 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 10 × 13
- = 130 cm3
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 600 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 10 = 50 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 50 × 12
- = 600 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 48 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 2 cm
- Base area = 6 × 4 = 24 cm2
- Height = 48 ÷ 24 = 2 cm
4.A rectangular prism is 7 cm long, 9 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 441 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 7 × 9 × 7
- = 441 cm3
5.A rectangular prism is 5 cm long, 12 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 120 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 5 × 12 × 2
- = 120 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 108 cm3. Its base is 9 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 9 × 2 = 18 cm2
- Height = 108 ÷ 18 = 6 cm
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 252 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 4 × 7 = 28 cm2
- Height = 252 ÷ 28 = 9 cm
8.A rectangular prism is 2 cm long, 4 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 40 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 2 × 4 × 5
- = 40 cm3
9.A rectangular prism is 12 cm long, 9 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 324 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 12 × 9 × 3
- = 324 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 108 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 4 × 3 = 12 cm2
- Height = 108 ÷ 12 = 9 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
