Year 6 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 14 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 14 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 784 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 14 × 8 = 56 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 56 × 14
- = 784 cm3
2.A rectangular prism is 12 cm long, 12 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 288 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 12 × 12 × 2
- = 288 cm3
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 14 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 448 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 4 = 32 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 32 × 14
- = 448 cm3
4.A rectangular prism is 8 cm long, 3 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 168 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 8 × 3 × 7
- = 168 cm3
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 56 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 4 = 8 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 8 × 7
- = 56 cm3
6.A rectangular prism is 10 cm long, 11 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 440 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 10 × 11 × 4
- = 440 cm3
7.A rectangular prism is 3 cm long, 9 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 243 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 3 × 9 × 9
- = 243 cm3
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 252 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 3 cm
- Base area = 12 × 7 = 84 cm2
- Height = 252 ÷ 84 = 3 cm
9.A rectangular prism is 14 cm long, 6 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 252 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 14 × 6 × 3
- = 252 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 6 cm long, 8 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 240 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 6 × 8 × 5
- = 240 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
