Year 6 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 4 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 450 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 5 × 10 = 50 cm2
- Height = 450 ÷ 50 = 9 cm
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 108 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 4 = 36 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 36 × 3
- = 108 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 432 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 12 × 9 = 108 cm2
- Height = 432 ÷ 108 = 4 cm
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 18 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 2 cm
- Base area = 3 × 3 = 9 cm2
- Height = 18 ÷ 9 = 2 cm
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 54 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 6 = 18 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 18 × 3
- = 54 cm3
6.A rectangular prism is 8 cm long, 2 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 128 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 8 × 2 × 8
- = 128 cm3
7.A rectangular prism is 15 cm long, 4 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 600 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 15 × 4 × 10
- = 600 cm3
8.A rectangular prism is 3 cm long, 12 cm wide and 6 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 216 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 3 × 12 × 6
- = 216 cm3
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 630 cm3. Its base is 9 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 9 × 10 = 90 cm2
- Height = 630 ÷ 90 = 7 cm
10.A rectangular prism is 6 cm long, 10 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 480 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 6 × 10 × 8
- = 480 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
