Free Year 7 Integers Explained: Working with Negative Numbers

Explains positive and negative whole numbers using the number line, then sets out the rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers with worked examples. Finishes with a BODMAS example and a self-check so students can confirm they have the sign rules right.

How to use this study guide

  1. Read it together first, pausing at each worked example to try the step before reading the answer.
  2. Attempt the "Check yourself" questions at the end without looking back.
  3. Then practise with a worksheet from the pathway above and finish with the topic test.

Common questions

Who is this study guide for?

Year 7 students (typically ages 12–13) working on integers. It is pitched at level 2 · standard.

Are the answers included?

This is a study guide, so there is no separate answer sheet; the 'Check yourself' questions include answers.

How long does it take?

About 20 minutes. Short, regular sessions work best: two or three a week beats one long one.

Do I need to sign up to download?

What you need to know

Integers are the whole numbers and their opposites: … −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3 … Negative numbers sit to the left of zero on the number line, so the further left a number is, the smaller it is. −5 is smaller than −2, even though 5 is bigger than 2. Think of temperatures: −5 °C is colder than −2 °C.

Ordering from smallest to largest: −5 < −2 < 0 < 3. The opposite of a number is the same distance from zero on the other side: the opposite of 4 is −4.

Adding and subtracting

  • Adding a positive moves you right on the number line: −3 + 5 = 2.
  • Subtracting a positive moves you left: 4 − 7 = −3.
  • Adding a negative is the same as subtracting: −2 + (−6) = −2 − 6 = −8.
  • Subtracting a negative is the same as adding: 3 − (−4) = 3 + 4 = 7.

Work out −5 + (−3) and 6 − (−2)

  1. −5 + (−3): adding a negative means moving left 3 from −5, giving −8.
  2. 6 − (−2): subtracting a negative means adding, so 6 + 2 = 8.
Common mistake: thinking 'two negatives make a positive' applies to everything. It is true for subtracting a negative and for multiplying or dividing two negatives, but −3 + (−4) is −7, not +7. Picture the number line: you start at −3 and move further left.

Multiplying and dividing. Multiply or divide the numbers as usual, then decide the sign: same signs give a positive, different signs give a negative.

SignsResultExample
positive × positivepositive4 × 6 = 24
negative × negativepositive−3 × −7 = 21
positive × negativenegative5 × −4 = −20
negative ÷ positivenegative−18 ÷ 3 = −6
negative ÷ negativepositive−20 ÷ −4 = 5

Order of operations (BODMAS). BODMAS still applies with negative numbers: Brackets, Orders (powers), Division and Multiplication, then Addition and Subtraction. Be especially careful with the signs.

2 − 3 × (−4)

  1. Multiplication first: 3 × (−4) = −12.
  2. The expression becomes 2 − (−12).
  3. Subtracting a negative is adding: 2 + 12 = 14.

Check yourself

  1. −7 + 10 = ?
  2. −4 − 9 = ?
  3. 6 − (−2) = ?
  4. −5 × −8 = ?
  5. 24 ÷ (−6) = ?
  6. −3 + 2 × (−5) = ?

Answers: 1. 3 2. −13 3. 8 4. 40 5. −4 6. −13 (2 × (−5) = −10, then −3 + (−10) = −13)
