Year 7 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 27 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 3 cm
- Base area = 3 × 3 = 9 cm2
- Height = 27 ÷ 9 = 3 cm
2.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 6 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 168 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 6 × 7
- = 168 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 100 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 4 × 5 = 20 cm2
- Height = 100 ÷ 20 = 5 cm
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 14 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 13 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 455 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 14 × 5 = 35 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 35 × 13
- = 455 cm3
5.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 4 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 144 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 4 × 9
- = 144 cm3
6.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 9 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 180 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 9 × 5
- = 180 cm3
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 9 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 126 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 7 = 14 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 14 × 9
- = 126 cm3
8.A rectangular prism is 5 cm long, 9 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 315 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 5 × 9 × 7
- = 315 cm3
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 405 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 3 = 27 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 27 × 15
- = 405 cm3
10.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 9 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 900 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 10 = 100 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 100 × 9
- = 900 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
