Year 7 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 3 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 13 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 52 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 2 = 4 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 4 × 13
- = 52 cm3
2.A rectangular prism is 12 cm long, 9 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,080 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 12 × 9 × 10
- = 1,080 cm3
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 168 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 7 = 14 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 14 × 12
- = 168 cm3
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 486 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 6 × 9 = 54 cm2
- Height = 486 ÷ 54 = 9 cm
5.A rectangular prism is 6 cm long, 10 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 540 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 6 × 10 × 9
- = 540 cm3
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 9 cm. The prism is 4 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 396 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 9 = 99 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 99 × 4
- = 396 cm3
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 352 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 11 × 4 = 44 cm2
- Height = 352 ÷ 44 = 8 cm
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 150 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 3 = 30 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 30 × 5
- = 150 cm3
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 720 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 8 × 10 = 80 cm2
- Height = 720 ÷ 80 = 9 cm
10.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 7 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 252 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 7 × 9
- = 252 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
