Year 8 Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Answers
Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.
1.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−9, 6) and (1, 8).
Answer: (−4, 7)
- x: (−9 + 1) ÷ 2 = −4
- y: (6 + 8) ÷ 2 = 7
2.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−5, −8) and (−6, 9).
Answer: (−5.5, 0.5)
- x: (−5 + (−6)) ÷ 2 = −5.5
- y: (−8 + 9) ÷ 2 = 0.5
3.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (7, 0) and (9, 9).
Answer: (8, 4.5)
- x: (7 + 9) ÷ 2 = 8
- y: (0 + 9) ÷ 2 = 4.5
4.Find the distance between (−3, 3) and (−11, 18).
Answer: 17
- Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 15
- d = √(82 + 152) = √289
- = 17
5.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (4, 4) and (−7, −3).
Answer: (−1.5, 0.5)
- x: (4 + (−7)) ÷ 2 = −1.5
- y: (4 + (−3)) ÷ 2 = 0.5
6.Find the distance between (5, 5) and (3, −4), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 9.2
- Horizontal change = 2, vertical change = 9
- d = √(22 + 92) = √85
- = 9.2
7.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−4, −9) and (8, 6).
Answer: (2, −1.5)
- x: (−4 + 8) ÷ 2 = 2
- y: (−9 + 6) ÷ 2 = −1.5
8.Find the distance between (−4, 3) and (2, 11).
Answer: 10
- Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 8
- d = √(62 + 82) = √100
- = 10
9.Find the distance between (5, 6) and (14, 18).
Answer: 15
- Horizontal change = 9, vertical change = 12
- d = √(92 + 122) = √225
- = 15
10.Find the distance between (−6, 4) and (0, −4).
Answer: 10
- Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 8
- d = √(62 + 82) = √100
- = 10
11.Find the distance between (1, −6) and (−7, 9).
Answer: 17
- Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 15
- d = √(82 + 152) = √289
- = 17
12.Find the distance between (−5, 2) and (3, −13).
Answer: 17
- Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 15
- d = √(82 + 152) = √289
- = 17
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
