Year 8 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism is 13 cm long, 2 cm wide and 6 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 156 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 13 × 2 × 6
- = 156 cm3
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 8 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 308 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 8 × 7 = 28 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 28 × 11
- = 308 cm3
3.A rectangular prism is 7 cm long, 5 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 350 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 7 × 5 × 10
- = 350 cm3
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 8 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 480 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 8 × 10 = 40 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 40 × 12
- = 480 cm3
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 100 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 10 = 20 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 20 × 5
- = 100 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 252 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 6 × 6 = 36 cm2
- Height = 252 ÷ 36 = 7 cm
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 50 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 5 × 2 = 10 cm2
- Height = 50 ÷ 10 = 5 cm
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 550 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 11 × 10 = 110 cm2
- Height = 550 ÷ 110 = 5 cm
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 4 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 128 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 4 = 32 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 32 × 4
- = 128 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 36 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 3 × 2 = 6 cm2
- Height = 36 ÷ 6 = 6 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
