Year 8 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers

Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).

1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 8 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 280 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 8 × 10 = 40 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 40 × 7
  3. = 280 cm3
2.A rectangular prism is 12 cm long, 8 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 960 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 12 × 8 × 10
  2. = 960 cm3
3.A rectangular prism is 6 cm long, 12 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 216 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 6 × 12 × 3
  2. = 216 cm3
4.A rectangular prism is 14 cm long, 11 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 616 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 14 × 11 × 4
  2. = 616 cm3
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 250 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 5 cm

  1. Base area = 5 × 10 = 50 cm2
  2. Height = 250 ÷ 50 = 5 cm
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 330 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 3 cm

  1. Base area = 11 × 10 = 110 cm2
  2. Height = 330 ÷ 110 = 3 cm
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 320 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 8 = 64 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 64 × 5
  3. = 320 cm3
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 648 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 6 cm

  1. Base area = 12 × 9 = 108 cm2
  2. Height = 648 ÷ 108 = 6 cm
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 9 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 90 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 5 = 10 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 10 × 9
  3. = 90 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 288 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 4 cm

  1. Base area = 8 × 9 = 72 cm2
  2. Height = 288 ÷ 72 = 4 cm

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
