Year 8 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 3 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 13 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 520 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 4 = 40 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 40 × 13
- = 520 cm3
2.A rectangular prism is 15 cm long, 2 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 90 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 15 × 2 × 3
- = 90 cm3
3.A rectangular prism is 5 cm long, 7 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 175 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 5 × 7 × 5
- = 175 cm3
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 770 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 7 = 70 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 70 × 11
- = 770 cm3
5.A rectangular prism is 10 cm long, 5 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 250 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 10 × 5 × 5
- = 250 cm3
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 300 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 10 = 50 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 50 × 6
- = 300 cm3
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 14 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 294 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 7 = 21 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 21 × 14
- = 294 cm3
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 756 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 12 × 9 = 108 cm2
- Height = 756 ÷ 108 = 7 cm
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 144 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 4 × 4 = 16 cm2
- Height = 144 ÷ 16 = 9 cm
10.A rectangular prism is 14 cm long, 12 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,344 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 14 × 12 × 8
- = 1,344 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
