Year 8 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 4 — Answers

Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).

1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 140 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 5 cm

  1. Base area = 7 × 4 = 28 cm2
  2. Height = 140 ÷ 28 = 5 cm
2.A rectangular prism is 13 cm long, 5 cm wide and 6 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 390 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 13 × 5 × 6
  2. = 390 cm3
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 264 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 8 = 88 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 88 × 3
  3. = 264 cm3
4.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 5 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 180 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 4 × 5 × 9
  2. = 180 cm3
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 60 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 3 cm

  1. Base area = 4 × 5 = 20 cm2
  2. Height = 60 ÷ 20 = 3 cm
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 30 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 2 = 10 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 10 × 3
  3. = 30 cm3
7.A rectangular prism is 14 cm long, 2 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 224 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 14 × 2 × 8
  2. = 224 cm3
8.A rectangular prism is 8 cm long, 9 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 144 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 8 × 9 × 2
  2. = 144 cm3
9.A rectangular prism is 15 cm long, 4 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 600 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 15 × 4 × 10
  2. = 600 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 216 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 2 cm

  1. Base area = 12 × 9 = 108 cm2
  2. Height = 216 ÷ 108 = 2 cm

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
