Year 9 Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Answers
Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.
1.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (3, 8) and (8, −2).
Answer: (5.5, 3)
- x: (3 + 8) ÷ 2 = 5.5
- y: (8 + (−2)) ÷ 2 = 3
2.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−7, −3) and (4, −8).
Answer: (−1.5, −5.5)
- x: (−7 + 4) ÷ 2 = −1.5
- y: (−3 + (−8)) ÷ 2 = −5.5
3.Find the distance between (−3, −5) and (−11, 10).
Answer: 17
- Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 15
- d = √(82 + 152) = √289
- = 17
4.Find the distance between (6, −4) and (12, −12).
Answer: 10
- Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 8
- d = √(62 + 82) = √100
- = 10
5.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−6, −1) and (1, −8).
Answer: (−2.5, −4.5)
- x: (−6 + 1) ÷ 2 = −2.5
- y: (−1 + (−8)) ÷ 2 = −4.5
6.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−6, 9) and (−5, −7).
Answer: (−5.5, 1)
- x: (−6 + (−5)) ÷ 2 = −5.5
- y: (9 + (−7)) ÷ 2 = 1
7.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (1, 2) and (6, 4).
Answer: (3.5, 3)
- x: (1 + 6) ÷ 2 = 3.5
- y: (2 + 4) ÷ 2 = 3
8.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−1, 9) and (9, −5).
Answer: (4, 2)
- x: (−1 + 9) ÷ 2 = 4
- y: (9 + (−5)) ÷ 2 = 2
9.Find the distance between (−5, 0) and (4, −12).
Answer: 15
- Horizontal change = 9, vertical change = 12
- d = √(92 + 122) = √225
- = 15
10.Find the distance between (1, −4) and (6, −7), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 5.8
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 3
- d = √(52 + 32) = √34
- = 5.8
11.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−2, −1) and (8, 2).
Answer: (3, 0.5)
- x: (−2 + 8) ÷ 2 = 3
- y: (−1 + 2) ÷ 2 = 0.5
12.Find the distance between (−1, 0) and (−3, 6), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 6.3
- Horizontal change = 2, vertical change = 6
- d = √(22 + 62) = √40
- = 6.3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
