Year 9 Gradient and Linear Equations Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers

Show your working. Gradient = rise ÷ run; the equation of a line can be written as y = (gradient)x + (y-intercept).

1.Find the gradient of the line through (6, 3) and (8, −1).

Answer: −2

  1. gradient = rise ÷ run = (−1 − 3) ÷ (8 − 6)
  2. = −4 ÷ 2 = −2
2.For the line y = 6x + 2, write the gradient and the y-intercept.

Answer: gradient 6; y-intercept 2

In y = (gradient)x + (y-intercept), the number multiplying x is the gradient and the constant is where the line crosses the y-axis.

3.A line has a gradient of 3 and passes through (−2, −2). Find its equation.

Answer: y = 3x + 4

  1. y = 3x + (y-intercept)
  2. −2 = 3 × (−2) + (y-intercept)
  3. y-intercept = −2 − (−6) = 4
  4. y = 3x + 4
4.A line has a gradient of −4 and passes through (−4, 25). Find its equation.

Answer: y = −4x + 9

  1. y = −4x + (y-intercept)
  2. 25 = −4 × (−4) + (y-intercept)
  3. y-intercept = 25 − 16 = 9
  4. y = −4x + 9
5.For the line y = −6x + 1, write the gradient and the y-intercept.

Answer: gradient −6; y-intercept 1

In y = (gradient)x + (y-intercept), the number multiplying x is the gradient and the constant is where the line crosses the y-axis.

6.Find the gradient of the line through (4, 4) and (8, 11).

Answer:

  1. gradient = rise ÷ run = (11 − 4) ÷ (8 − 4)
  2. = 7 ÷ 4 =
7.Find the gradient of the line through (−4, 2) and (−7, 8).

Answer: −2

  1. gradient = rise ÷ run = (8 − 2) ÷ (−7 − (−4))
  2. = 6 ÷ −3 = −2
8.Find the gradient of the line through (0, 6) and (−4, 10).

Answer: −1

  1. gradient = rise ÷ run = (10 − 6) ÷ (−4 − 0)
  2. = 4 ÷ −4 = −1
9.For the line y = −x − 4, write the gradient and the y-intercept.

Answer: gradient −1; y-intercept −4

In y = (gradient)x + (y-intercept), the number multiplying x is the gradient and the constant is where the line crosses the y-axis.

10.Find the gradient of the line through (−2, −1) and (3, 3).

Answer:

  1. gradient = rise ÷ run = (3 − (−1)) ÷ (3 − (−2))
  2. = 4 ÷ 5 =

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
