Year 9 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 8 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 704 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 8 = 88 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 88 × 8
- = 704 cm3
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 441 cm3. Its base is 9 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 9 × 7 = 63 cm2
- Height = 441 ÷ 63 = 7 cm
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 560 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 10 × 7 = 70 cm2
- Height = 560 ÷ 70 = 8 cm
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 225 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 5 × 9 = 45 cm2
- Height = 225 ÷ 45 = 5 cm
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 180 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 4 = 12 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 12 × 15
- = 180 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 350 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 10 × 5 = 50 cm2
- Height = 350 ÷ 50 = 7 cm
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 10 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 300 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 6 = 30 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 30 × 10
- = 300 cm3
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 420 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 7 × 10 = 70 cm2
- Height = 420 ÷ 70 = 6 cm
9.A rectangular prism is 5 cm long, 4 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 60 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 5 × 4 × 3
- = 60 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 13 cm long, 12 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 780 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 13 × 12 × 5
- = 780 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
