Year 9 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 3 — Answers

Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).

1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 13 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 234 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 3 = 18 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 18 × 13
  3. = 234 cm3
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 168 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 2 cm

  1. Base area = 12 × 7 = 84 cm2
  2. Height = 168 ÷ 84 = 2 cm
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 270 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 5 = 45 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 45 × 6
  3. = 270 cm3
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 150 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 3 cm

  1. Base area = 10 × 5 = 50 cm2
  2. Height = 150 ÷ 50 = 3 cm
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 4 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 144 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 4 = 36 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 36 × 4
  3. = 144 cm3
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 504 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 6 = 72 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 72 × 7
  3. = 504 cm3
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 80 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 2 = 16 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 16 × 5
  3. = 80 cm3
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 180 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 5 cm

  1. Base area = 12 × 3 = 36 cm2
  2. Height = 180 ÷ 36 = 5 cm
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 180 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 6 cm

  1. Base area = 6 × 5 = 30 cm2
  2. Height = 180 ÷ 30 = 6 cm
10.A rectangular prism is 5 cm long, 3 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 60 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 5 × 3 × 4
  2. = 60 cm3

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
