Year 9 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 4 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 880 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 11 × 10 = 110 cm2
- Height = 880 ÷ 110 = 8 cm
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 864 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 12 × 8 = 96 cm2
- Height = 864 ÷ 96 = 9 cm
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 180 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 5 × 6 = 30 cm2
- Height = 180 ÷ 30 = 6 cm
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 14 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 840 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 14 × 8 = 56 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 56 × 15
- = 840 cm3
5.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 2 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 72 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 2 × 9
- = 72 cm3
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 10 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 160 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 8 = 16 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 16 × 10
- = 160 cm3
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 352 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 11 × 8 = 88 cm2
- Height = 352 ÷ 88 = 4 cm
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 140 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 4 × 5 = 20 cm2
- Height = 140 ÷ 20 = 7 cm
9.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 3 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 120 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 3 × 10
- = 120 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 72 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 6 × 2 = 12 cm2
- Height = 72 ÷ 12 = 6 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
