Children read short questions like Can a fish swim? and circle yes or no, then read a five-line story about Ben and his cat, Kit, and answer yes or no questions by looking back at the words. Yes or no questions are a gentle first step into reading comprehension, because children only need to read carefully and check, not write long answers.
