Year 10 Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Answers
Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.
1.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (8, −4) and (6, −2).
Answer: (7, −3)
- x: (8 + 6) ÷ 2 = 7
- y: (−4 + (−2)) ÷ 2 = −3
2.Find the distance between (−4, −1) and (−2, 7), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 8.2
- Horizontal change = 2, vertical change = 8
- d = √(22 + 82) = √68
- = 8.2
3.Find the distance between (−4, 2) and (−1, 6).
Answer: 5
- Horizontal change = 3, vertical change = 4
- d = √(32 + 42) = √25
- = 5
4.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (7, −1) and (3, 6).
Answer: (5, 2.5)
- x: (7 + 3) ÷ 2 = 5
- y: (−1 + 6) ÷ 2 = 2.5
5.Find the distance between (−1, 6) and (8, 18).
Answer: 15
- Horizontal change = 9, vertical change = 12
- d = √(92 + 122) = √225
- = 15
6.Find the distance between (−3, −5) and (−6, −1).
Answer: 5
- Horizontal change = 3, vertical change = 4
- d = √(32 + 42) = √25
- = 5
7.Find the distance between (6, 1) and (11, 13).
Answer: 13
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 12
- d = √(52 + 122) = √169
- = 13
8.Find the distance between (−1, −5) and (−7, −9), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 7.2
- Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 4
- d = √(62 + 42) = √52
- = 7.2
9.Find the distance between (−2, −3) and (−1, −6), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 3.2
- Horizontal change = 1, vertical change = 3
- d = √(12 + 32) = √10
- = 3.2
10.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−8, 4) and (−1, 4).
Answer: (−4.5, 4)
- x: (−8 + (−1)) ÷ 2 = −4.5
- y: (4 + 4) ÷ 2 = 4
11.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (3, −5) and (−9, 5).
Answer: (−3, 0)
- x: (3 + (−9)) ÷ 2 = −3
- y: (−5 + 5) ÷ 2 = 0
12.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (1, −2) and (0, −8).
Answer: (0.5, −5)
- x: (1 + 0) ÷ 2 = 0.5
- y: (−2 + (−8)) ÷ 2 = −5
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
