Year 10 Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.
1.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−4, 7) and (−8, 9).
Answer: (−6, 8)
- x: (−4 + (−8)) ÷ 2 = −6
- y: (7 + 9) ÷ 2 = 8
2.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (5, −6) and (0, 1).
Answer: (2.5, −2.5)
- x: (5 + 0) ÷ 2 = 2.5
- y: (−6 + 1) ÷ 2 = −2.5
3.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (7, 4) and (−1, 6).
Answer: (3, 5)
- x: (7 + (−1)) ÷ 2 = 3
- y: (4 + 6) ÷ 2 = 5
4.Find the distance between (3, −2) and (−2, −14).
Answer: 13
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 12
- d = √(52 + 122) = √169
- = 13
5.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (4, −9) and (7, 1).
Answer: (5.5, −4)
- x: (4 + 7) ÷ 2 = 5.5
- y: (−9 + 1) ÷ 2 = −4
6.Find the distance between (4, 6) and (−1, 15), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 10.3
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 9
- d = √(52 + 92) = √106
- = 10.3
7.Find the distance between (6, −3) and (0, 5).
Answer: 10
- Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 8
- d = √(62 + 82) = √100
- = 10
8.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−6, 6) and (2, −1).
Answer: (−2, 2.5)
- x: (−6 + 2) ÷ 2 = −2
- y: (6 + (−1)) ÷ 2 = 2.5
9.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (6, −3) and (3, 5).
Answer: (4.5, 1)
- x: (6 + 3) ÷ 2 = 4.5
- y: (−3 + 5) ÷ 2 = 1
10.Find the distance between (1, −6) and (−8, −14), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 12.0
- Horizontal change = 9, vertical change = 8
- d = √(92 + 82) = √145
- = 12.0
11.Find the distance between (−6, 5) and (−8, 14), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 9.2
- Horizontal change = 2, vertical change = 9
- d = √(22 + 92) = √85
- = 9.2
12.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−6, 6) and (−1, −5).
Answer: (−3.5, 0.5)
- x: (−6 + (−1)) ÷ 2 = −3.5
- y: (6 + (−5)) ÷ 2 = 0.5
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
