Year 10 Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Practice Set 4 — Answers
Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.
1.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (4, −8) and (−1, 0).
Answer: (1.5, −4)
- x: (4 + (−1)) ÷ 2 = 1.5
- y: (−8 + 0) ÷ 2 = −4
2.Find the distance between (4, −1) and (−1, −13).
Answer: 13
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 12
- d = √(52 + 122) = √169
- = 13
3.Find the distance between (−1, −5) and (3, −7), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 4.5
- Horizontal change = 4, vertical change = 2
- d = √(42 + 22) = √20
- = 4.5
4.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−5, 5) and (4, −3).
Answer: (−0.5, 1)
- x: (−5 + 4) ÷ 2 = −0.5
- y: (5 + (−3)) ÷ 2 = 1
5.Find the distance between (0, 0) and (−9, −12).
Answer: 15
- Horizontal change = 9, vertical change = 12
- d = √(92 + 122) = √225
- = 15
6.Find the distance between (4, 1) and (−4, 4), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 8.5
- Horizontal change = 8, vertical change = 3
- d = √(82 + 32) = √73
- = 8.5
7.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (7, 7) and (−4, 4).
Answer: (1.5, 5.5)
- x: (7 + (−4)) ÷ 2 = 1.5
- y: (7 + 4) ÷ 2 = 5.5
8.Find the distance between (5, −4) and (−1, −12).
Answer: 10
- Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 8
- d = √(62 + 82) = √100
- = 10
9.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (2, −2) and (4, −4).
Answer: (3, −3)
- x: (2 + 4) ÷ 2 = 3
- y: (−2 + (−4)) ÷ 2 = −3
10.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (9, −4) and (7, −4).
Answer: (8, −4)
- x: (9 + 7) ÷ 2 = 8
- y: (−4 + (−4)) ÷ 2 = −4
11.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−1, −9) and (−6, 9).
Answer: (−3.5, 0)
- x: (−1 + (−6)) ÷ 2 = −3.5
- y: (−9 + 9) ÷ 2 = 0
12.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−7, 8) and (6, 6).
Answer: (−0.5, 7)
- x: (−7 + 6) ÷ 2 = −0.5
- y: (8 + 6) ÷ 2 = 7
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
