Year 10 Gradient and Linear Equations Worksheet — Level 1 — Practice Set 2 — Answers

Show your working. Gradient = rise ÷ run; the equation of a line can be written as y = (gradient)x + (y-intercept).

1.For the line y = −3x + 6, write the gradient and the y-intercept.

Answer: gradient −3; y-intercept 6

In y = (gradient)x + (y-intercept), the number multiplying x is the gradient and the constant is where the line crosses the y-axis.

2.Find the gradient of the line through (−4, 2) and (1, −3).

Answer: −1

  1. gradient = rise ÷ run = (−3 − 2) ÷ (1 − (−4))
  2. = −5 ÷ 5 = −1
3.Find the gradient of the line through (−6, 5) and (−4, 1).

Answer: −2

  1. gradient = rise ÷ run = (1 − 5) ÷ (−4 − (−6))
  2. = −4 ÷ 2 = −2
4.For the line y = −6x + 7, write the gradient and the y-intercept.

Answer: gradient −6; y-intercept 7

In y = (gradient)x + (y-intercept), the number multiplying x is the gradient and the constant is where the line crosses the y-axis.

5.For the line y = −4x + 2, write the gradient and the y-intercept.

Answer: gradient −4; y-intercept 2

In y = (gradient)x + (y-intercept), the number multiplying x is the gradient and the constant is where the line crosses the y-axis.

6.Find the gradient of the line through (1, −4) and (6, −19).

Answer: −3

  1. gradient = rise ÷ run = (−19 − (−4)) ÷ (6 − 1)
  2. = −15 ÷ 5 = −3
7.For the line y = −3x + 9, write the gradient and the y-intercept.

Answer: gradient −3; y-intercept 9

In y = (gradient)x + (y-intercept), the number multiplying x is the gradient and the constant is where the line crosses the y-axis.

8.Find the gradient of the line through (−4, 3) and (0, −9).

Answer: −3

  1. gradient = rise ÷ run = (−9 − 3) ÷ (0 − (−4))
  2. = −12 ÷ 4 = −3
9.For the line y = −4x, write the gradient and the y-intercept.

Answer: gradient −4; y-intercept 0

In y = (gradient)x + (y-intercept), the number multiplying x is the gradient and the constant is where the line crosses the y-axis.

10.For the line y = −5x − 8, write the gradient and the y-intercept.

Answer: gradient −5; y-intercept −8

In y = (gradient)x + (y-intercept), the number multiplying x is the gradient and the constant is where the line crosses the y-axis.

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
