Year 10 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 3 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 30 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 2 = 6 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 6 × 5
- = 30 cm3
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 350 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 10 × 5 = 50 cm2
- Height = 350 ÷ 50 = 7 cm
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 63 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 3 cm
- Base area = 3 × 7 = 21 cm2
- Height = 63 ÷ 21 = 3 cm
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 900 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 10 × 10 = 100 cm2
- Height = 900 ÷ 100 = 9 cm
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 480 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 10 × 8 = 80 cm2
- Height = 480 ÷ 80 = 6 cm
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 36 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 3 cm
- Base area = 4 × 3 = 12 cm2
- Height = 36 ÷ 12 = 3 cm
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 144 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 4 = 48 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 48 × 3
- = 144 cm3
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 180 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 4 = 12 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 12 × 15
- = 180 cm3
9.A rectangular prism is 13 cm long, 10 cm wide and 6 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 780 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 13 × 10 × 6
- = 780 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 400 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 10 × 10 = 100 cm2
- Height = 400 ÷ 100 = 4 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
Great work. Here's what to try next:
