Free Year 10 Light: Reflection, Refraction and the Electromagnetic Spectrum Worksheet

Students apply the law of reflection to find angles and describe images in plane mirrors, predict whether light bends towards or away from the normal when it is refracted, and explain dispersion and why objects appear coloured. They order the electromagnetic spectrum, match each type of wave to its uses and dangers, and use c = fλ to calculate wavelength, frequency and the time light takes to travel from the Sun.

How to use this worksheet

  1. Print the PDF or complete it on screen. Write the student's name and date at the top.
  2. Read the instructions for each part together before starting. Encourage working to be shown.
  3. Mark with the answer sheet. Use the model answers and success criteria as a guide rather than a single right answer.
  4. Record the score, celebrate what went well, then follow the "What's next" suggestion.

Common questions

Who is this worksheet for?

Year 10 students (typically ages 14–15) working on energy, light, sound & electricity. It is pitched at level 2 · standard; a harder version is linked above.

Are the answers included?

Yes. The PDF includes a full answer sheet with model answers and success criteria where there is more than one good answer. You can also view the answers online.

How long does it take?

About 45 minutes for 17 questions. Short, regular sessions work best: two or three a week beats one long one.

Do I need to sign up to download?

No. Click Download Free PDF and it opens immediately. It is free for personal, classroom and homeschool use.

Measure every angle from the normal, not from the surface.

Part A: Reflection

Angles are always measured from the normal, an imaginary line at 90° to the surface where the ray hits it. Law of reflection: the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection.

1.A ray of light hits a plane mirror with an angle of incidence of 35°. What is the angle of reflection?
2.A ray strikes a mirror at 20° to the mirror surface. What is the angle of incidence?
3.You stand 1.5 m in front of a plane mirror. How far are you from your image?
4.Give three features of the image formed in a plane mirror. (answer space)

Part B: Refraction

Refraction is the change in direction of light as it passes from one material to another, caused by a change in speed. Entering a denser material (air → glass or water) light slows down and bends towards the normal. Entering a less dense material it speeds up and bends away from the normal.

5.A ray of light passes from air into a glass block at an angle. How does it bend?
  1. ATowards the normal, because it slows down
  2. BAway from the normal, because it slows down
  3. CTowards the normal, because it speeds up
  4. DIt does not bend
6.A ray leaves water and enters air. Which way does it bend, and why? (answer space)
7.A ray of light that enters a glass block along the normal (at 90° to the surface) does not change direction. ☐ True   ☐ False
8.Explain why a swimming pool looks shallower than it really is. (answer space)

Part C: Colour and the electromagnetic spectrum

White light is a mixture of colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Objects look coloured because they reflect some colours and absorb the rest.

Visible light is one small part of the electromagnetic spectrum. All electromagnetic waves are transverse, can travel through a vacuum and travel at the speed of light, c = 3 × 10⁸ m/s. From longest to shortest wavelength (lowest to highest frequency and energy): radio, microwaves, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays.

9.A glass prism splits white light into a spectrum. What is this called, and why does it happen? (answer space)
10.A red apple is viewed in a room lit only by blue light. What colour does it appear?
  1. ARed
  2. BBlue
  3. CPurple
  4. DBlack
11.Write the seven main regions of the electromagnetic spectrum in order, from longest to shortest wavelength. (answer space)
12.Which type of electromagnetic wave causes sunburn and can increase the risk of skin cancer?
  1. AInfrared
  2. BUltraviolet
  3. CRadio
  4. DMicrowave
