Choose the tone word that would still be accurate if your teacher asked, "Why that word and not a near synonym?"

Part A: Build the word bank

Tone is the attitude a writer or speaker conveys towards the subject and audience. Precise tone words make analysis sharper than general words such as happy, sad or angry.

1.Match each tone word to its meaning.
  • wry
  • sardonic
  • elegiac
  • wistful
  • scathing
  • reverent
  • detached
  • ominous
  • suggesting that something bad is about to happen
  • gently longing for something past or out of reach
  • mournful, lamenting something lost
  • severely and harshly critical
  • dryly humorous, often with a touch of irony
  • mocking in a bitter, scornful way
  • emotionally distant and objective
  • deeply respectful, almost worshipful

Part B: Choose the precise term

Circle the tone word that best describes each original extract.

2.The old dock is quiet now. The cranes stand like the bones of something enormous that died here, and the gulls have stopped expecting anyone.
  1. Aelegiac
  2. Bscathing
  3. Cplayful
  4. Dconciliatory
3.Congratulations to the council, which has spent two years and a small fortune producing a report that tells us the river is wet.
  1. Areverent
  2. Bsardonic
  3. Cwistful
  4. Dearnest
4.Sometimes, on warm evenings, I can still hear the screen door of that house, and I wish, briefly, that I could walk back through it.
  1. Aominous
  2. Bwistful
  3. Cscathing
  4. Ddetached
5.The figures are clear. Average temperatures have risen by 1.1 degrees. The report makes no recommendations.
  1. Adetached
  2. Belegiac
  3. Cwry
  4. Dindignant
6.The house was silent. Too silent. Somewhere upstairs, a door that had been closed was now open.
  1. Awistful
  2. Bominous
  3. Creverent
  4. Dsardonic
7.She worked for forty years in a classroom that leaked, and she never once let a child feel that they were not worth the effort.
  1. Areverent
  2. Bscathing
  3. Cdetached
  4. Dominous

Part C: Fine distinctions and shifts

Answer in full sentences.

8.Explain the difference between wry and sardonic.[2 marks] (answer space)
9.Explain the difference between elegiac and wistful.[2 marks] (answer space)
10.This extract contains a tone shift. Name the tone before and after the shift, and identify the word where it turns. For years the festival was the best weekend of the summer: music spilling from every doorway, strangers dancing in the square, children asleep on their parents' shoulders by midnight. This year, the square was empty, and a single notice on the gate explained, in small print, that the funding had been withdrawn.[3 marks] (answer space)
