Remember: spinning gives a day, the Moon's orbit takes about a month and the Earth's orbit takes a year.

Part A: Moving through space

Read the passage. Then circle the best answer.

The Sun, the Earth and the Moon are all shaped like balls (spheres). The Sun is by far the biggest. The Earth is about four times wider than the Moon.

The Earth does two things at once. It spins on its axis once about every 24 hours, which gives us day and night. It also travels in a path around the Sun called an orbit. One orbit takes about 365 days — one year.

The Moon orbits the Earth. One trip around the Earth takes about a month (about 27 days). The Moon does not make its own light; we see it because sunlight bounces off it.

1.Which is the biggest?
  1. Athe Earth
  2. Bthe Moon
  3. Cthe Sun
2.What does the Earth travel around?
  1. Athe Moon
  2. Bthe Sun
  3. Cthe stars
  4. Dnothing
3.About how long does the Earth take to orbit the Sun once?
  1. Aone day
  2. Bone week
  3. Cone month
  4. Dabout 365 days
4.What does the Moon travel around?
  1. Athe Sun only
  2. Bthe Earth
  3. CMars
  4. Dthe stars
5.What causes one day and one night?
  1. Athe Earth spinning once
  2. Bthe Moon orbiting the Earth
  3. Cthe Earth orbiting the Sun
  4. Dthe Sun spinning

Part B: Orbits and sizes

6.Match each movement to how long it takes.
  • the Earth spinning once
  • the Moon orbiting the Earth
  • the Earth orbiting the Sun
  • about a month
  • about 365 days
  • about 24 hours
7.The path one object takes around another in space is called an (answer space).
8.The Moon shines because it reflects light from the (answer space).
9.Put these in order from smallest to biggest: Sun, Moon, Earth. (answer space)

Part C: True or false?

Write True or False.

10.The Sun orbits the Earth. ☐ True   ☐ False
11.The Moon makes its own light. ☐ True   ☐ False
12.While the Earth orbits the Sun, it keeps spinning. ☐ True   ☐ False
