Year 7 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 8 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 480 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 8 × 8 = 32 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 32 × 15
- = 480 cm3
2.A rectangular prism is 9 cm long, 2 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 162 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 9 × 2 × 9
- = 162 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 168 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 7 × 3 = 21 cm2
- Height = 168 ÷ 21 = 8 cm
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 432 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 12 × 6 = 72 cm2
- Height = 432 ÷ 72 = 6 cm
5.A rectangular prism is 3 cm long, 5 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 60 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 3 × 5 × 4
- = 60 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 128 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 4 × 4 = 16 cm2
- Height = 128 ÷ 16 = 8 cm
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 8 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 10 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 120 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 8 × 3 = 12 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 12 × 10
- = 120 cm3
8.A rectangular prism is 10 cm long, 9 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 450 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 10 × 9 × 5
- = 450 cm3
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 210 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 3 cm
- Base area = 7 × 10 = 70 cm2
- Height = 210 ÷ 70 = 3 cm
10.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 9 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 180 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 10 = 20 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 20 × 9
- = 180 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
