Year 8 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 3 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your working. Use the π button on your calculator and round to 1 decimal place.
1.A cylinder has a radius of 8 cm and a height of 8 cm. Find its volume, correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 1608.5 cm3
- V = π × r2 × h = π × 82 × 8
- = π × 512
- ≈ 1608.5 cm3
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 10 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 600 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 10 = 60 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 60 × 10
- = 600 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 320 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 10 × 4 = 40 cm2
- Height = 320 ÷ 40 = 8 cm
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 256 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 8 × 4 = 32 cm2
- Height = 256 ÷ 32 = 8 cm
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 14 cm and height 9 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 945 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 14 × 9 = 63 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 63 × 15
- = 945 cm3
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 360 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 2 = 24 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 24 × 15
- = 360 cm3
7.A cylinder has a radius of 2 cm and a height of 6 cm. Find its volume, correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 75.4 cm3
- V = π × r2 × h = π × 22 × 6
- = π × 24
- ≈ 75.4 cm3
8.A cylinder has a radius of 6 cm and a height of 13 cm. Find its volume, correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 1470.3 cm3
- V = π × r2 × h = π × 62 × 13
- = π × 468
- ≈ 1470.3 cm3
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 756 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 12 × 9 = 108 cm2
- Height = 756 ÷ 108 = 7 cm
10.A cylinder has a radius of 6 cm and a height of 17 cm. Find its volume, correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 1922.7 cm3
- V = π × r2 × h = π × 62 × 17
- = π × 612
- ≈ 1922.7 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
Great work. Here's what to try next:
