Year 8 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism is 14 cm long, 6 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 588 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 14 × 6 × 7
- = 588 cm3
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 70 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 5 = 10 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 10 × 7
- = 70 cm3
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 4 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 96 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 4 = 24 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 24 × 4
- = 96 cm3
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 8 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 528 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 6 = 66 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 66 × 8
- = 528 cm3
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 64 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 4 × 4 = 16 cm2
- Height = 64 ÷ 16 = 4 cm
6.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 9 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 324 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 9 × 9
- = 324 cm3
7.A rectangular prism is 2 cm long, 5 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 30 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 2 × 5 × 3
- = 30 cm3
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 210 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 3 = 30 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 30 × 7
- = 210 cm3
9.A rectangular prism is 8 cm long, 10 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 160 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 8 × 10 × 2
- = 160 cm3
10.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 13 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,560 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 10 = 120 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 120 × 13
- = 1,560 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
