Year 8 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 120 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 8 × 3 = 24 cm2
- Height = 120 ÷ 24 = 5 cm
2.A rectangular prism is 10 cm long, 9 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 900 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 10 × 9 × 10
- = 900 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 90 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 2 cm
- Base area = 5 × 9 = 45 cm2
- Height = 90 ÷ 45 = 2 cm
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 528 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 8 = 88 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 88 × 6
- = 528 cm3
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 756 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 12 × 9 = 108 cm2
- Height = 756 ÷ 108 = 7 cm
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 420 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 7 = 84 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 84 × 5
- = 420 cm3
7.A rectangular prism is 3 cm long, 7 cm wide and 6 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 126 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 3 × 7 × 6
- = 126 cm3
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 220 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 4 = 44 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 44 × 5
- = 220 cm3
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 9 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 486 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 9 = 81 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 81 × 6
- = 486 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 11 cm long, 8 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 352 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 11 × 8 × 4
- = 352 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
