Year 8 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 3 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism is 14 cm long, 10 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 420 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 14 × 10 × 3
- = 420 cm3
2.A rectangular prism is 2 cm long, 12 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 96 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 2 × 12 × 4
- = 96 cm3
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 8 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 576 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 6 = 72 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 72 × 8
- = 576 cm3
4.A rectangular prism has a volume of 420 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 10 × 7 = 70 cm2
- Height = 420 ÷ 70 = 6 cm
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 480 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 10 × 6 = 60 cm2
- Height = 480 ÷ 60 = 8 cm
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 72 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 3 = 24 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 24 × 3
- = 72 cm3
7.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 231 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 7 = 21 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 21 × 11
- = 231 cm3
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 8 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 768 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 8 = 96 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 96 × 8
- = 768 cm3
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 847 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 7 = 77 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 77 × 11
- = 847 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 264 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 11 × 4 = 44 cm2
- Height = 264 ÷ 44 = 6 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
