Year 8 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 4 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 36 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 3 × 3 = 9 cm2
- Height = 36 ÷ 9 = 4 cm
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 270 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 3 = 18 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 18 × 15
- = 270 cm3
3.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 7 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 140 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 7 × 5
- = 140 cm3
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 9 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 324 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 4 = 36 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 36 × 9
- = 324 cm3
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 40 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 4 × 2 = 8 cm2
- Height = 40 ÷ 8 = 5 cm
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 539 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 7 = 77 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 77 × 7
- = 539 cm3
7.A rectangular prism is 11 cm long, 4 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 308 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 11 × 4 × 7
- = 308 cm3
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 10 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,100 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 10 = 110 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 110 × 10
- = 1,100 cm3
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 216 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 8 = 72 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 72 × 3
- = 216 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 450 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 5 × 10 = 50 cm2
- Height = 450 ÷ 50 = 9 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
