Year 9 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 2 cm. The prism is 7 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 140 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 2 = 20 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 20 × 7
- = 140 cm3
2.A rectangular prism is 12 cm long, 5 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 300 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 12 × 5 × 5
- = 300 cm3
3.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 8 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 256 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 8 × 8
- = 256 cm3
4.A rectangular prism is 3 cm long, 3 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 90 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 3 × 3 × 10
- = 90 cm3
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 504 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 12 × 7 = 84 cm2
- Height = 504 ÷ 84 = 6 cm
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 528 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 8 = 88 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 88 × 6
- = 528 cm3
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 315 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 5 × 7 = 35 cm2
- Height = 315 ÷ 35 = 9 cm
8.A rectangular prism is 9 cm long, 8 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 216 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 9 × 8 × 3
- = 216 cm3
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 108 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 3 × 4 = 12 cm2
- Height = 108 ÷ 12 = 9 cm
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 147 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 7 × 3 = 21 cm2
- Height = 147 ÷ 21 = 7 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
