Year 9 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 8 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 704 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 8 = 88 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 88 × 8
- = 704 cm3
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 16 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 11 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 352 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 16 × 4 = 32 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 32 × 11
- = 352 cm3
3.A rectangular prism is 2 cm long, 2 cm wide and 6 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 24 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 2 × 2 × 6
- = 24 cm3
4.A rectangular prism is 13 cm long, 12 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,248 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 13 × 12 × 8
- = 1,248 cm3
5.A rectangular prism is 14 cm long, 7 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 294 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 14 × 7 × 3
- = 294 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 330 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 6 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 5 cm
- Base area = 11 × 6 = 66 cm2
- Height = 330 ÷ 66 = 5 cm
7.A rectangular prism is 3 cm long, 4 cm wide and 9 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 108 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 3 × 4 × 9
- = 108 cm3
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 20 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 180 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 20 × 6 = 60 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 60 × 3
- = 180 cm3
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 9 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 990 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 10 = 110 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 110 × 9
- = 990 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 96 cm3. Its base is 8 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 6 cm
- Base area = 8 × 2 = 16 cm2
- Height = 96 ÷ 16 = 6 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
