Year 9 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 3 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 36 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 3 × 3 = 9 cm2
- Height = 36 ÷ 9 = 4 cm
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 18 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 450 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 18 × 10 = 90 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 90 × 5
- = 450 cm3
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 15 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 360 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 8 = 24 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 24 × 15
- = 360 cm3
4.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 5 cm wide and 6 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 120 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 5 × 6
- = 120 cm3
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 4 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 13 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 156 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 4 × 6 = 12 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 12 × 13
- = 156 cm3
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 128 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 4 × 4 = 16 cm2
- Height = 128 ÷ 16 = 8 cm
7.A rectangular prism is 9 cm long, 2 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 36 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 9 × 2 × 2
- = 36 cm3
8.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 14 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 13 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 728 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 14 × 8 = 56 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 56 × 13
- = 728 cm3
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 8 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 8 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 320 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 8 × 10 = 40 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 40 × 8
- = 320 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 5 cm long, 2 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 100 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 5 × 2 × 10
- = 100 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
