Year 9 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 4 — Answers

Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).

1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 180 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 9 cm

  1. Base area = 5 × 4 = 20 cm2
  2. Height = 180 ÷ 20 = 9 cm
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 14 cm and height 7 cm. The prism is 10 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 490 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 14 × 7 = 49 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 49 × 10
  3. = 490 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 240 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 3 cm

  1. Base area = 10 × 8 = 80 cm2
  2. Height = 240 ÷ 80 = 3 cm
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 14 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 1,344 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 8 = 96 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 96 × 14
  3. = 1,344 cm3
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 300 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 5 cm

  1. Base area = 6 × 10 = 60 cm2
  2. Height = 300 ÷ 60 = 5 cm
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 6 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 150 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 6 × 10 = 30 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 30 × 5
  3. = 150 cm3
7.A rectangular prism is 9 cm long, 9 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 162 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 9 × 9 × 2
  2. = 162 cm3
8.A rectangular prism is 10 cm long, 6 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 180 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 10 × 6 × 3
  2. = 180 cm3
9.A rectangular prism is 3 cm long, 12 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 252 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 3 × 12 × 7
  2. = 252 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 100 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 4 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 5 cm

  1. Base area = 5 × 4 = 20 cm2
  2. Height = 100 ÷ 20 = 5 cm

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
