Year 10 Coordinates: Quadrants, Midpoints and Distance Worksheet — Level 3 — Answers
Midpoint = (average of the x-values, average of the y-values). Distance: use Pythagoras with the horizontal and vertical changes.
1.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (1, 8) and (1, −1).
Answer: (1, 3.5)
- x: (1 + 1) ÷ 2 = 1
- y: (8 + (−1)) ÷ 2 = 3.5
2.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−8, −4) and (−9, −2).
Answer: (−8.5, −3)
- x: (−8 + (−9)) ÷ 2 = −8.5
- y: (−4 + (−2)) ÷ 2 = −3
3.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−7, 8) and (2, −5).
Answer: (−2.5, 1.5)
- x: (−7 + 2) ÷ 2 = −2.5
- y: (8 + (−5)) ÷ 2 = 1.5
4.Find the distance between (1, 3) and (2, 4), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 1.4
- Horizontal change = 1, vertical change = 1
- d = √(12 + 12) = √2
- = 1.4
5.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−6, 9) and (−9, 5).
Answer: (−7.5, 7)
- x: (−6 + (−9)) ÷ 2 = −7.5
- y: (9 + 5) ÷ 2 = 7
6.Find the distance between (−1, 0) and (6, −2), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 7.3
- Horizontal change = 7, vertical change = 2
- d = √(72 + 22) = √53
- = 7.3
7.Find the distance between (−5, −3) and (−8, −7).
Answer: 5
- Horizontal change = 3, vertical change = 4
- d = √(32 + 42) = √25
- = 5
8.Find the distance between (−4, 6) and (1, 18).
Answer: 13
- Horizontal change = 5, vertical change = 12
- d = √(52 + 122) = √169
- = 13
9.Find the distance between (1, −4) and (−3, 1), correct to 1 decimal place.
Answer: 6.4
- Horizontal change = 4, vertical change = 5
- d = √(42 + 52) = √41
- = 6.4
10.Find the distance between (−1, −2) and (5, 6).
Answer: 10
- Horizontal change = 6, vertical change = 8
- d = √(62 + 82) = √100
- = 10
11.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (−3, 1) and (4, 3).
Answer: (0.5, 2)
- x: (−3 + 4) ÷ 2 = 0.5
- y: (1 + 3) ÷ 2 = 2
12.Find the midpoint of the segment joining (8, −1) and (7, −5).
Answer: (7.5, −3)
- x: (8 + 7) ÷ 2 = 7.5
- y: (−1 + (−5)) ÷ 2 = −3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
