Year 4 Number Lines Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 4 — Answers
First find how much each space is worth: (end − start) ÷ number of spaces.
1.A number line goes from 0 to 400 and is split into 4 equal spaces. The arrow is 1 space along from 0. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 100
- Each space is (400 − 0) ÷ 4 = 100
- 0 + 1 × 100 = 100
2.A number line goes from 700 to 1,700 and is split into 10 equal spaces. The arrow is 9 spaces along from 700. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 1,600
- Each space is (1,700 − 700) ÷ 10 = 100
- 700 + 9 × 100 = 1,600
3.What number is halfway between 170 and 670?
Answer: 420
- 670 − 170 = 500; half of that is 250
- 170 + 250 = 420
4.A number line goes from 800 to 900 and is split into 4 equal spaces. The arrow is 1 space along from 800. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 825
- Each space is (900 − 800) ÷ 4 = 25
- 800 + 1 × 25 = 825
5.A number line goes from 9,000 to 10,250 and is split into 5 equal spaces. The arrow is 1 space along from 9,000. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 9,250
- Each space is (10,250 − 9,000) ÷ 5 = 250
- 9,000 + 1 × 250 = 9,250
6.What number is halfway between 170 and 350?
Answer: 260
- 350 − 170 = 180; half of that is 90
- 170 + 90 = 260
7.A number line goes from 900 to 1,400 and is split into 10 equal spaces. The arrow is 8 spaces along from 900. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 1,300
- Each space is (1,400 − 900) ÷ 10 = 50
- 900 + 8 × 50 = 1,300
8.A number line goes from 4,000 to 5,250 and is split into 5 equal spaces. The arrow is 2 spaces along from 4,000. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 4,500
- Each space is (5,250 − 4,000) ÷ 5 = 250
- 4,000 + 2 × 250 = 4,500
9.What number is halfway between 120 and 280?
Answer: 200
- 280 − 120 = 160; half of that is 80
- 120 + 80 = 200
10.A number line goes from 2,000 to 4,500 and is split into 10 equal spaces. The arrow is 6 spaces along from 2,000. What number does the arrow point to?
Answer: 3,500
- Each space is (4,500 − 2,000) ÷ 10 = 250
- 2,000 + 6 × 250 = 3,500
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
