Year 5 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 140 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 5 × 7 = 35 cm2
- Height = 140 ÷ 35 = 4 cm
2.A rectangular prism has a volume of 240 cm3. Its base is 12 cm by 5 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 4 cm
- Base area = 12 × 5 = 60 cm2
- Height = 240 ÷ 60 = 4 cm
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 270 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 10 × 3 = 30 cm2
- Height = 270 ÷ 30 = 9 cm
4.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 10 cm and height 4 cm. The prism is 12 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 240 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 10 × 4 = 20 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 20 × 12
- = 240 cm3
5.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 8 cm and height 3 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 72 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 8 × 3 = 12 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 12 × 6
- = 72 cm3
6.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 12 cm and height 5 cm. The prism is 6 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 180 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 12 × 5 = 30 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 30 × 6
- = 180 cm3
7.A rectangular prism is 6 cm long, 11 cm wide and 5 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 330 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 6 × 11 × 5
- = 330 cm3
8.A rectangular prism is 15 cm long, 11 cm wide and 7 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 1,155 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 15 × 11 × 7
- = 1,155 cm3
9.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 24 cm and height 10 cm. The prism is 5 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 600 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 24 × 10 = 120 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 120 × 5
- = 600 cm3
10.A rectangular prism has a volume of 504 cm3. Its base is 7 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 7 × 9 = 63 cm2
- Height = 504 ÷ 63 = 8 cm
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
