Year 5 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 2 — Answers

Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).

1.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 12 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 144 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 4 × 12 × 3
  2. = 144 cm3
2.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 22 cm and height 6 cm. The prism is 3 cm long. Find its volume.

Answer: 198 cm3

  1. Area of the triangle = ½ × 22 × 6 = 66 cm2
  2. V = area of end × length = 66 × 3
  3. = 198 cm3
3.A rectangular prism has a volume of 352 cm3. Its base is 11 cm by 8 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 4 cm

  1. Base area = 11 × 8 = 88 cm2
  2. Height = 352 ÷ 88 = 4 cm
4.A rectangular prism is 13 cm long, 5 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 260 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 13 × 5 × 4
  2. = 260 cm3
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 150 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 10 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 5 cm

  1. Base area = 3 × 10 = 30 cm2
  2. Height = 150 ÷ 30 = 5 cm
6.A rectangular prism has a volume of 288 cm3. Its base is 4 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 8 cm

  1. Base area = 4 × 9 = 36 cm2
  2. Height = 288 ÷ 36 = 8 cm
7.A rectangular prism has a volume of 75 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 5 cm

  1. Base area = 5 × 3 = 15 cm2
  2. Height = 75 ÷ 15 = 5 cm
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 315 cm3. Its base is 5 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.

Answer: 7 cm

  1. Base area = 5 × 9 = 45 cm2
  2. Height = 315 ÷ 45 = 7 cm
9.A rectangular prism is 3 cm long, 5 cm wide and 4 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 60 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 3 × 5 × 4
  2. = 60 cm3
10.A rectangular prism is 13 cm long, 6 cm wide and 8 cm high. Find its volume.

Answer: 624 cm3

  1. V = length × width × height = 13 × 6 × 8
  2. = 624 cm3

Marking tips

  • Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
  • For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
  • Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
