Year 5 Volume of Prisms and Cylinders Worksheet — Level 2 — Practice Set 3 — Answers
Show your working. Volume is measured in cubic units (cm³).
1.A rectangular prism has a volume of 81 cm3. Its base is 3 cm by 3 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 9 cm
- Base area = 3 × 3 = 9 cm2
- Height = 81 ÷ 9 = 9 cm
2.A rectangular prism is 2 cm long, 4 cm wide and 10 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 80 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 2 × 4 × 10
- = 80 cm3
3.A triangular prism has a triangular end with base 8 cm and height 8 cm. The prism is 14 cm long. Find its volume.
Answer: 448 cm3
- Area of the triangle = ½ × 8 × 8 = 32 cm2
- V = area of end × length = 32 × 14
- = 448 cm3
4.A rectangular prism is 10 cm long, 5 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 100 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 10 × 5 × 2
- = 100 cm3
5.A rectangular prism has a volume of 432 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 9 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 6 × 9 = 54 cm2
- Height = 432 ÷ 54 = 8 cm
6.A rectangular prism is 11 cm long, 4 cm wide and 2 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 88 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 11 × 4 × 2
- = 88 cm3
7.A rectangular prism is 13 cm long, 5 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 195 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 13 × 5 × 3
- = 195 cm3
8.A rectangular prism has a volume of 294 cm3. Its base is 6 cm by 7 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 7 cm
- Base area = 6 × 7 = 42 cm2
- Height = 294 ÷ 42 = 7 cm
9.A rectangular prism has a volume of 160 cm3. Its base is 10 cm by 2 cm. Find its height.
Answer: 8 cm
- Base area = 10 × 2 = 20 cm2
- Height = 160 ÷ 20 = 8 cm
10.A rectangular prism is 4 cm long, 5 cm wide and 3 cm high. Find its volume.
Answer: 60 cm3
- V = length × width × height = 4 × 5 × 3
- = 60 cm3
Marking tips
- Give credit for correct method even when the final answer slips — the working shows where the thinking went right.
- For open-ended tasks, use the success criteria as a checklist rather than looking for one "right" answer.
- Celebrate what went well first, then pick one thing to work on next.
